Clerkship Opportunities: Judge Rita Lin (U.S.D.C., N.D. Cal.)

Judge Rita F. Lin of the Northern District of California, San Francisco courthouse, is currently accepting applications for term clerk positions to begin November 1, 2023 and to continue through August 2024. Judge Lin is also accepting applications for 12-month term clerk positions to begin in August 2024. Chambers will begin reviewing applications as received, and interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis. University of California Office of the President: Principal Counsel, Labor and Employment

This position requires substantial expertise in the labor and employment practice area, providing advice to a diverse client base for the University’s 230,000 person workforce, including system-wide and campus human resources, academic personnel, compliance, and risk management staff. Services include handling and negotiating/mediating pre-litigated claims in the University’s employment practices liability program; responsibility for traditional labor matters such as advice and counseling during labor negotiations, interpretation of collective bargaining agreements, and handling or overseeing litigation before administrative agencies such as before the Public Employment Relations Board; drafting, reviewing and revising a variety of documents involving the University’s interest, such as policies, contracts, position statements, mediation briefs, and advice memoranda; advising clients on a broad range of employment issues; and conducting trainings.

The position requires substantial knowledge of federal and state labor and employment laws including the Fair Employment and Housing Act, Americans With Disabilities Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, California Family Rights Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, California public sector labor laws such as the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act or the National Labor Relations Act, as well as privacy, First Amendment, and whistleblower issues. The position involves independently handling a full range of legal matters and projects in the labor and employment area, to include the most complex and that of substantial importance and impact; interpreting complex facts and the law in areas of high ambiguity; and, providing functional advice to clients regarding risk assessment and liability.

Leonard Carder, LLP: Associate Counsel – ERISA/Employee Benefits

Leonard Carder, LLP, based in Oakland, California, is looking for attorneys with 3-5+ years of experience/interest in employee benefits law and a demonstrated commitment to the goals of workers’ rights and the labor movement. Ideal candidates should have ERISA experience and familiarity with multiemployer-defined benefit pension plans, defined contribution plans, and welfare benefit plans. Other specific experience with governmental plans, QDROs, subrogation, and trust fund collections will be considered. In addition, strong research, writing, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with unions, multiemployer trust funds, and plan participants are essential.

The salary range for associate attorneys with at least three years of experience in employee benefits work is between $101,500 and $138,000 annually, depending on bar passage and experience. Associate attorneys are also eligible for loan repayment up to $4,000 per year and annual bonuses.
